By Durk Jr, age 13 Finally going to see Chris Cornell solo. I had seen him before with Audioslave, but I read all the reviews and I saw all the videos on YouTube. And it sounded so great. But first………. I had to go to school. I couldn’t concentrate at all. Didn’t have any tests or something so that was a relief. Had to sit through those long hours. But then the bell ringed. My mom and dad came to pick me up with the car. And we were heading for Amsterdam.
Thanks to Durk Jr for the photo We came there 5 hours early, just to stand in front row. There were a couple of fans already. Talked with them and we were waiting, waiting and waiting. But then something really cool happened. There stopped a blinded taxi in front of the venue. My dad was like: ‘I think that is Chris Cornell’. I didn’t believe it. But I grabbed my Audioslave booklet of the first album. Grabbed a pen and off to the taxi. But there were 2 bodyguards who pushed me away. I was really mad. But that couldn’t ruin my day. And what a day, because we could here them soundchecking, some of the waiting people thought they played a CD, it was so good, and then we had to wait again.
Thanks to Durk Jr for the photo The doors opened around 7 o’clock. I was running hard to get in the front row. And it worked. I was there! I was right in front of the mic. At first I wanted to get a t-shirt. And my dad and mom would save the place for me. And then we had to wait and wait and wait. The concert was supposed to start around 8 o’clock. But it didn’t. It started around 8.45. But that was OK. I can wait 5 hours for Chris Cornell. Who wouldn’t! They started with 2 Soundgarden classics. The band nailed Spoonman and Outshined. We also noticed we couldn’t hear the vocals so well, but a few rows back the sound was very good. That was something that was very disappointing to me, but I wouldn’t leave my place in front of the mic. Then 2 Audioslave songs: Show Me How To Live and Original Fire, those songs were very awesome. They continued with 2 TOTD songs. Say Hello To Heaven was my favorite song of the evening. The band started with the intro. And Chris saw my Audioslave booklet and my pen on the stage. He signed it and was shaking my hand. WOW!!!! WOW!!!! What an evening already.
Thanks to Durk Jr for the photo The guitarists are very good. They sure are the ‘Purveyors of fine rock guitar’ as Peter Thorn calls it. Chris said a few times: ‘make some noise for the band they are so talented’; and that’s what they are. Then they played Hunger Strike. You Know My Name and No Such Thing followed. Great to hear them live. Then they played Mission!! I like that song very much. They continued with a very awesome song of the first Audioslave album. Chris said it was one of his favorites from that album: What You Are. They played that song very, very, very well. Man I loved that song. Rusty Cage was then played. Then Seasons came. Never actually heard that song very often, but I love it very much. An acoustic set followed by Mr. Cornell. He started with I am the Highway. Then he sang Wide Awake. Also a very cool song to hear live. Then also one of my favorites of the night: Scar on the sky. It is one of my favorites of Carry On. The next song was: Can’t change me and then Doesn’t Remind Me, half acoustic half with the band. We already heard him singing Loud Love at the soundcheck. Later they changed the setlist and added Loud Love instead of another song. I don’t know what song that was, but I think it was Cochise. It was very cool. We were the first to hear Killing Birds live. I thought it was a very cool song and the album version is very cool too.(The album Carry On was already for sale there, it probably was an early version because on my Windows Media Player ‘Scar On The Sky’ is called ‘Hover’.) They then played Poison Eye. It has that nice groovy riff in it. Which I really like. Billie Jean was next. They also played Burden In My Hand. That was very cool. It is always one of my favorite Soundgarden songs. Jesus Christ Pose!!! JCP was next! Wow that was awesome. What a great song to hear live. Very Cool! After the first encore they played Arms Around Your Love. Also a very nice song to hear live. Then they played Be Yourself. Always loved that song from the moment I heard it till now. They ended the first encore with Black Hole Sun. I wonder if Chris ever gets sick of playing that song. Not that I think he does because it is such a great song.
Thanks to Durk Jr for the photo They had a little break and Jason Sutter throws his drum sticks in the audience. I got one!!!! Hell yeah. His autograph is on it and his name. So cool!! Then the second encore. He started with Zero Chance. He said: ‘In this venue was the last time Hiro Yamamoto played with Soundgarden. Ben Shepherd replaced him and it had a really big impact on me and the band. He also wrote this song with me’. Very nice Ben! It is a awesome song. Sunshower was next. In Berlin this was the last song. But not in Holland. Very nice song to finally hear live. I still don’t get it why he didn’t put that one on Euphoria Morning. Last but definately not least Slaves and Bulldozers. Wow. What a song and what a drum solo by Jason Sutter. That was also one of my top 3 songs of the night. It was very disappointing the concert was ‘already’ over. They played for over 2 and a half hours. What a night. One of my favorite concerts ever. Had to buy a Chris Cornell Basecap afterwards. Waiting to get out of the venue. I saw one of the crewmembers throwing a plectrum of Peter Thorn in the audience. Was searching for it and I found it. Man, I am such a lucky bastard. A drumstick, a plectrum and a autograph of the man himself. What a night What a night! Can’t imagine a better day then that one! After the show we met Mo and her husband from the boards, they are very cool people. Then we’re heading home again.
Thanks to Durk Jr for the photo by ivo kendra "Another night, another concert. I was really looking forward to this one: Chris Cornell performing in Melkweg, Amsterdam. When Audioslave failed to support their third album “Revelations” and when Chris Cornell subsequently left the band earlier this year, I was wondering when will I see Cornell performing again. Luckily, the fans and myself didn’t have to wait for too long. A few days before Cornell’s second solo album “Carry On” hit the shops, we had the man back on the stage. And he returned in style! Chris Cornell, one of the most influential rock musicians, opened the concert with Soundgarden’s “Spoonman” and treated the ecstatic crowds with more than two hours of great songs he wrote for Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Audioslave and his solo projects. Cornell was obviously enjoying himself, I personally liked that he played so many songs from his upcoming solo album “Carry On”, including the cover version of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” (yeah, only he can get away with it). My legs hurt and I lost my voice… and I cannot imagine it to be any other way after such a great rock and roll treat. Funny thing is that the club’s security didn’t check anyone’s bags before the concert, but they did so when people were leaving. Apparently, someone stole something from the band after the concert. Maybe a guitar? Or a drum or two? Hopefully no one stole the man himself so we can see him rockin’ again soon"
thanks to Ivo Kendra for the photo - see more at his blog by thomas rueb "The concert was beyond amazing. Chris was in a great mood during the show and he smiled and joked around a lot. His voice was unlike I've ever heard him before. I know everybody who has seen him live keeps bragging about how he effortlessly he sings any song live nowadays, so I must admit I was a bit sceptical but I was completely blown away. BLOWN away! Incredible. The highest of pitches sounded clean as twenty years ago, fantastic. The setlist was beyond perfect, too. The songs just kept coming, I don't think I missed any of my favourites. Spoonman is of course the perfect opener to set the mood and it did. This was the first time I heard Original Fire live and I loved it. Fantastic with everyone clapping along. Say Hello 2 Heaven brought me damn near to tears; what an amazing song too hear live, I had goosebumps all over. Brilliant . You Know My Name also whipped up a good reaction from the crowd. It was also great for me to hear Mission live, since I never had the chance to catch a show during the Euphoria Morning-tour. Great song live, way better than the studio version in my eyes. I didn't like No Such Thing when I first heard it, but live I somehow 'got it'. Good sing-along. But another real highlight was Seasons. MY GOD! Both the guitarists were sitting in a chair and Chris was sitting in front of the drums singing so relaxed and yet so passionate. Again, goosebumps... What followed next was the acoustic set which was everything I expected of it. I Am The Highway was good as ever with the exeptions of some improvised high notes near the end that set it apart from the other thousand times he has done the song live. I had deliberately not listened to any of the unreleased new songs, so Scar in the Sky was new for me. Sounded like a beautiful ballad, although to my shame I can't recall the melody. Then followed Wide Awake which was as great as on the Sweden-bootleg, although the raw screams at the end sounded more like his high-pitched Soundgarden-wail yesterday, which I love. Can't Change Me; beautiful, haunting and tragic. Then followed one of my less favourite songs with Doesn't Remind Me, which had the band kicking in halfway. Following Doesn't Remind Me, they played Loud Love, one of my all time favourites and it didn't disappoint. Encroyable! After that were two other unknowns for me: Killing Birds and Poison Eye. He told the crowd it was the first time he played the former in front of a crowd, so that was special. Although it is a favourite around here, Poison Eye had me more impressed. Especially the (hard to describe) dial tone guitar sound during the chorus (?). Poppy, catchy, but I loved it.
thanks to geekbunnypaprika for the photo - see more here It was also the first time I heard the full band version of Billie Jean and I think I even prefer this version to the solo acoustic one. Beautiful, with some excellent, yet subtle guitar work. This one had the crowd singing along big time. Burden in my Hand was great as ever and Jesus Christ Pose had me in a complete frenzy... Jesus christ, what a song to hear live. I went nuts. Then the band left the stage only to return a few minutes later to delve into Arms Around Your Love. Be Yourself, for some reason, was THE song the crowd responded to most. Nobody except me and some other were moving a lot during the entire show, but this song had everybody jumping up and down. It paved the way for everybody to sing along with the classic Black Hole Sun. They left the stage again, came back and played Zero Chance. Chris introduced the song by telling about original Soundgarden-bassist Hiro who left the band ("after he show he just said 'fuck you'. Well, I don't think anyone said 'fuck', but he left. He was replaced by someone who had a great impact on Soundgarden's music and I wrote this song with him."). Great song, also an absolute favourite. Another unexpected highlight was Sunshower which has always been an amazing song but was now a brilliant jamsession with a delirious solo by Jogi. The song lasted for almost ten minutes. This was also the case with the last song, Slaves & Buldozers. This was the best band effort I have ever heard: Chris sounded out of this world, the guitarists were going nuts and there was a drum solo. During the solo the guitarist would tease by repeatedly playing a few seconds of the riff and then stopping to let the drumming countinue. Unbelievable, what a back-up band. As I said Chris was in a really good mood. He interacted a lot with the crowd. He opened by saying (just like he did last time Audioslave was here) that we "weren't as stoned as we usually are". He did a hilarious imitation of stoned fans that were slowly clapping "but you didn't hear anything". Really funny. A girl that was standing next to me handed him a drawing, but we couldn't see what she made. Later, during the acoustic set, he told everyone to stand really still so he could "touch us all". He closed his eyes and starting to move his hands hippiestyle like he was patting all over our heards and "messing up your haircuts, too. Yeah, I'm spreading the love. And some germs, but that's okay, it'll be like the sixties. I was born in the sixties, but that seems like a long time ago when I say it now". Very funny. Later someone handed him what I believed to be a sock, which he put on the microphone stand and someone else gave him (how do you call them? There like stockings yo u put over your arms so it looks like you have tattoos all over - that) and he said in a cool voice he was going to "fucking roooooock". It was great. Also I had some interaction with him during the show. It pained me to say that the crowd mostly wasn't very responsive. Most people didn't really move and during the acoustic set we could hear the murmur of a LOT of people talking in the back, which is a shame. I stood no more than half a meter from the stage between him and Yogi and I was rocking out with some people next to me, what he clearly noticed as he pointed and laughed a few times to us. Jogi threw a lot of picks in our direction. I caught two, but gave one to the girl behind me. What a guitarist! I had won tickets to the Meet & Greet, but it pains me to say that it almost was a letdown. Don't get me wrong, I still can't believe I shook the man's hand and got my Badmotorfinger-LP signed, but he wasn't in a good mood. I don't think it took more than half a minute for anyone and he didn't really smile or say anything. It was quite formal, just an autograph and a picture, no talking. Also the enormous bodyguard next to him didn't make it more cozy. But that's okay, I know he's a great guy and I can understand how tiresome it must be to always have to enthousiastic to crazed-out fans after you gave away a performance like he did. The rest of the band were a little warmer, but all in all the M&G was over in five or ten minutes for the ten of us. It doesn't matter, I shook his hand, had my LP signed (about which he said: "Cool.") and my Down on the Upside-digipack, and my picture with him, which is more than I could ever have dreamed of. It was the best concert I have ever been to, and that says a lot. It was above all of my expectations. An incredible Evening with Chris Cornell. by monika "Amsterdam, my impressions!!!!!!!! You all have seen the great setlist, AWESOME!!! He played 2.45 hours, I´m wondering what he is doing with his voice, every second day a show and his amazing voice don't get any damage?? It was a really, really awesome show, he was joking around, shaking hands to the people in the front row and the choice of the songs was really brilliant. As he played Be Yourself, the crowd sang and clapped and Chris held the mic into the crowd and let them sing a part of the song, the vibes there were absolutely amazing!! The band was absolutely great, he made a brilliant choice with them and I hope he keeps them for a long time! I must tell you that Sutter and Peter played such great solos! I cant take it in words, they were so deep in their solos..............that rocked!!! They played like they would be taken by the devil!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chris and the guys kicked me definitely out of my shoes!!!!! It was a great experience and I hope that I get another chance to see him soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon!!!! We need definately more dates in Germany or Netherlands! !!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU FOR THE AMAZING SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The only thing I have to criticize is, that the guys who took care of the sound didn't make a good job, sometimes it sounds so terrible, coz the music was to loud so that you couldnt hear this incredible voice of Chris, that sucks!!!
thanks to Monika for the photo by riddlesostrong "It was an amazing night. They played a total of 29 songs, the show lasted over 2.5 hours. Check out the amazing setlist! The show was supposed to start at 8 but the band hit the stage at about 8.45. Chris obviously enjoyed being on stage al lot, cracking jokes and laughing a lot. His voice sounded as good and powerfull as ever! I don't think he missed one note. Overall there was a lot of energy and interaction on stage. The musicians did an excellent job. Only downside to this show was that it was in Holland. Why do the Dutch always have to be so loud and drunk and show no respect? There was a 5 song acoustic set in the middle of the show, but a lot of people were talking really loud through it, making it hard to enjoy. Chris also talked to the audience a lot in between songs but it was too hard to make out because of the noise. It couldn't ruin my otherwise perfect evening though. "

OOR ‘No smoking in front of the stage please.’ Against The Machine speelden, behaalde veel succes. - Jasper Van Vugt, OOR Original Dutch review by Jasper Van Vugt, OOR Translation by Jessika Buitenweg (thanks Jessika!!) 'No smoking in front of the stage please.' Those words, written on A4-size signs hanging on doors and pillars throughout the Melkweg, are there for a reason. We happen to be dealing with A Throat. One many singers are dreaming of, but only few possess. Chris Cornell, however, has one. And That Voice needs to be spared, especially now that Cornell is walking the solo path again. He already did this very skillfully on his first solo album Euphoria Morning, after Soundgarden, the band he became famous with in the early 90's, split up. On this album he showed his introvert side through folklike singer-songwriter pieces with a psychedelic edge. All the more remarkable that after this, Cornell felt tempted to be the lead vocalist for Audioslave. The band, containing three of the four members of Rage Against The Machine, became a great success. However, despite this success, Audioslave did not seem to be able to creatively rise above the two bands it had derived from. It never did sound completely natural: one could just not get used to the rusty voice of Cornell mixed with the freaky guitar tunes of Tom Morello and the awesome rhythm the other two band members put together. Consequently, to those who prefer Cornell's solowork, this year brought glorious news. Cornell, having said goodbye to Audioslave, is about to release a second solo album, which a sold-out Melkweg is getting a sample of tonight. Cornell is aware of the fact that the crowd has not forgotten Audioslave. Most of the people in the audience today were teenagers when the wave of grunge arrived in the Netherlands. The crowd reacts euphorically when the excellent band, directly after entering the stage, starts with Spoonman. Loud, driven and overwhelming, exactly the way the song is remembered by every rocklover over thirty. Magnificent. What follows is a setlist which includes songs of Soundgarden and Audioslave as well as from Cornell's solo career, and takes up more than two and a half hours. Of course there is much attention for his new cd, Carry On, which at first sounds tougher and more worldly than Euphoria Morning, although thanks to Cornell's band even songs from this first album sound much more extensive tonight. The well-tempered Cornell loses himself several times in obvious old stadiumrock, and we won't even discuss his cover of Michael Jackson's Billy Jean. It is immediately trusted that he is used to performing for larger crowds, although it must be said that the treesized bodyguard by the side of the podium seems out of place. It is striking that Soundgarden's rocking tracks seem to emerge much better tonight than the louder Audioslave songs or those from his solo career. This feeling is strengthened by the sound quality. The bassdrum is much too loud and especially spoils the acoustic parts of the concert. Cornell is at his best when using only an acoustic guitar and his own voice: the emotional ladenness of his lyrics hits its goal far better. We patiently wait for Cornell to make a country album with Ethan Jones (Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon). It can't be forgotten that that other man with The Voice, a certain mr Cash, already made a cover of one of Cornell's songs, the wonderful Rusty Cage. Until that album has been made, no cigarettes will be lit in front of the stage. "I'm usually so far away from the audience, I never get to do that anymore", grapt de zanger hierover. - Ester Meerman, 3Voor12 Amsterdam
